Le château de Kuckuckstein à Liebstadt est situé sur un éperon rocheux au-dessus de la vallée de la rivière Seidewitz, dans un endroit très favorable pour contrôler la route commerciale de la vallée de l’Elbe à la Bohême en passant par les montagnes minérales orientales.
Liebstadt et donc le château de Kuckuckstein sont situés à environ 15 km au sud-ouest de Pirna dans une vallée entre les vallées profondément découpées de la Gottleuba et du Müglitz à peu près à la même hauteur que Bad Gottleuba et Glashütte. À ce moment-là, Molchgrund et Hennersbacher Grund se rejoignent dans la vallée de Seidewitz. Le château trône sur un rocher de gneiss à environ 30 m au-dessus de la place du marché de Liebstadt.
