Il castello di Kuckuckstein a Liebstadt si trova su un promontorio roccioso sopra la valle del fiume Seidewitz, in una posizione molto favorevole per il controllo della via commerciale dalla valle dell’Elba attraverso i Monti Metalliferi verso la Boemia.
Liebstadt e quindi il castello di Kuckuckstein si trovano circa 15 km a sud-ovest di Pirna in una valle tra le profonde valli della Gottleuba e della Müglitz, a circa la stessa altitudine di Bad Gottleuba e Glashütte. In questo punto, il Molchgrund e il Hennersbacher Grund confluiscono nella valle di Seidewitz. Il castello svetta su una roccia di gneiss a circa 30 m sopra la piazza del mercato di Liebstadt.
