Slot Kuckuckstein in Liebstadt ligt op een rotsachtige uitloper boven het rivierdal van de Seidewitz, op een zeer gunstige locatie voor de controle van de handelsroute van het Elbdal over het Osterzgebirge naar Bohemen.
Liebstadt en daarmee Slot Kuckuckstein liggen ongeveer 15 km ten zuidwesten van Pirna in een vallei tussen de diep uitgesleten valleien van de Gottleuba en de Müglitz, ongeveer op dezelfde hoogte als Bad Gottleuba en Glashütte. Op deze plek gaan Molchgrund en Hennersbacher Grund over in het Seidewitztal. Het kasteel torent ongeveer 30 m boven het marktplein van Liebstadt uit op een gneisrots.
