A orillas de la Sèvre Niortaise, se alza uno de los conjuntos más bellos de mazmorras gemelas románicas de Francia clasificado Monumento Histórico. Formaba el reducto central de un vasto castillo en forma de cuadrilátero de 700 m de largo. Es el rey de Inglaterra, Enrique II Plantagenét, que, queriendo poner en estado de defensa las fincas que su esposa, Aliénor de Aquitania le trae con su matrimonio, decide reconstruir, a finales del siglo XII, una fortaleza inexpugnable.

Exposición permanente "Donjon, 1000 años de historia", arqueología regional (de la Prehistoria a la época romana) y etnografía poitevina (reconstrucción de un interior Poitevin y mobiliario), exposiciones temporales, visitas y talleres temáticos, tabletas digitales (listo gratis), vista desde la torre norte.
