Esta plaza lleva el nombre de su fundador , antiguo alcalde de Mézières (de 1878 a 1903).
En 1892, los desempleados de Mézières crearon esta plaza frente a las murallas del norte de la ciudad. A dos pasos de la torre de la escuela se alza la estatua de bronce del caballero Bayard , de 2,80 metros de altura sobre un pedestal de 4 metros. Los parterres de flores anuales adornan el paseo, que se extiende hasta los tilos, donde, cuando hace buen tiempo, se reúnen los jugadores de petanca.
