El Goyt nace en los páramos de Axe Edge, cerca del río Dane y la taberna Cat and Fiddle. La zona se conoce como el Valle Alto del Goyt. La antigua carretera Cat and Fiddle desde Buxton hasta Macclesfield cruza el río justo cuando este gira hacia el norte para descender por su conocido valle. El río fluye luego bajo el Puente de Derbyshire, que era la antigua frontera entre Derbyshire y Cheshire. Más tarde, llega a un antiguo puente de carga que fue trasladado cuando se construyó el embalse de Errwood en la década de 1960 (ver foto abajo). Más abajo hay otro embalse, el embalse de Fernilee. La línea original del ferrocarril Cromford y High Peak se puede ver cerca de este punto.
