Según investigaciones de un arqueólogo holandés Janric van Rookhuijzen, el nombre original del Partenón en la Acrópolis no se referiría al edificio que ahora llamamos Partenón. El edificio que originalmente se llamaba Partenón era el edificio al que pertenecen las cariatides. Partenón significa tanto como casa virgen. Esa casa virgen también era el templo original de Atenea. Este edificio que ahora conocemos como el Partenón se llamaba el Gran Templo de Atenea.
