Selon des recherches menées par un archéologue néerlandais Janric van Rookhuijzen, le nom original du Parthénon sur l'Acropole ne ferait pas référence au bâtiment que nous appelons maintenant le Parthénon. Le bâtiment qui était initialement appelé le Parthénon était celui où les cariatides appartenaient. Parthénon signifie autant qu'une maison vierge. Cette maison vierge était aussi le temple original d'Athena. Ce bâtiment que nous connaissons maintenant sous le nom de Parthénon était appelé le Grand Temple d'Athena.
