Volgens onderzoek van een Nederlandse archeoloog en oudheidkundige Janric van Rookhuijzen zou de oorspronkelijke naam van het Parthenon op de Acropolis niet slaan op het gebouw dat we nu het Parthenon noemen. Het gebouw dat men oorsponkelijk het Parthenon noemde was dat waar de kareathiden deel van uitmaken. Parthenon betekent zoveel als maagdenhuis. Dat maagdenhuis was ook de oorspronkelijke tempel van Athene. Dit gebouw dat we nu kennen als het Pathenon werd de Grote tempel van Athene genoemd.
