Se encuentra al oeste de Heerenveen, en el camino entre Joure y Sint Nicolaasga. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 805 habitantes. También incluye una pequeña parte de la aldea de Heide. El pueblo se formó en el siglo XIX alrededor de un puente sobre el Scharsterrijn: un canal que va del lago Tjeukemeer a los Langweerderwielen. A la altura de los scharren se construyó el pueblo. Durante mucho tiempo, Scharsterbrug también fue llamado De Scharren.
