El monasterio fue fundado en 1847 por las hermanas franciscanas de Heythuysen. Más tarde establecieron también una escuela de niñas y una escuela de formación, María Inmaculada. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el complejo sufrió graves daños y en 1948 los padres pasionistas fundaron un seminario, San Pablo de la Cruz, que más tarde se llamó Gabriëlcollege. También se impartió educación secundaria aquí. Desde 1923, fue la R.K. Kweekschool María-Inmaculada. Entre 1977 y 1993, el complejo fue un internado para barqueros y una escuela de formación para la navegación por el Rin y la navegación interior y costera de la Fundación Real Fondo de Educación para la Navegación. En 1997, el complejo fue demolido, excepto las fachadas de la escuela de formación. Se han construido viviendas y apartamentos, y el vecindario ahora se llama Maasstaete.
