Ataque al puente ferroviario y puente de tráfico
El 20 de septiembre comenzó un nuevo intento de llegar al puente de tráfico, esta vez con un enfoque desde las calles más al oeste del puente. Aquí, los estadounidenses tuvieron más éxito y la defensa alemana fue empujada hasta la colina junto al Valkhof, que se encuentra al lado del puente. Con intensos bombardeos y combates casa por casa, finalmente se alcanzó la rampa hacia el Waalbrug alrededor de las seis de la tarde.
