Este palacio es uno de los edificios civiles más bellos de la ciudad y fue construido en el siglo XVI por Fernando Brandão como residencia de Abreu Távora (Condes de Carreira, los heraldos están en la fachada del palacio ), pero posteriormente fue remodelado por el arquitecto militar Manuel Pinto Villalobos en el siglo XVIII.
El edificio ocupa una manzana entera y presenta una arquitectura típicamente manuelina, con hermosas ventanas y puertas con marcos de piedra. En la fachada norte se encuentra adosada una pequeña capilla barroca .
Aquí se encuentran las oficinas del Ayuntamiento desde 1972.
