Nazarje es desde 1994 un municipio independiente en la región eslovena de Savinjska y cuenta con 2754 habitantes. En partes del municipio, la tronadura de madera fue una importante fuente de ingresos hasta la Primera Guerra Mundial.
En Nazarje se encuentra el castillo de Vrbovec, que en fuentes antiguas se menciona a menudo con el nombre alemán de Altenburg. El castillo se construyó en la desembocadura del Dreta en el Savinja. La mención más antigua del castillo data de 1248. La apariencia actual de Vrbovec data de la época de las renovaciones en 1480. Inicialmente fue propiedad de los patriarcas de Aquileya, luego de los condes de Celje y, posteriormente, hasta 1615, en manos de los Habsburgo. En 1615, el castillo fue comprado por la diócesis de Ljubljana, que lo mantuvo hasta la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
