Par la construction des auvents sur les quais de l'Escaut vers 1884, l'Escaut a été dérobé à la vue des promeneurs. Déjà en avril 1879, cela avait été prévu par le député De Decker, qui avait suggéré à la Chambre l'idée de construire des terrasses de promenade en colonnades le long de l'Escaut, à l'exemple de Gênes.
