À la demande du roi Léopold II, Henri Maquet a conçu en 1900 la première galerie royale : une connexion en L, fermée et couverte, entre le chalet royal et un grand salon de forme octogonale. La galerie est maintenant connue sous le nom de « Galeries vénitiennes », en référence à l'architecture classique de Venise. Lorsque la famille royale a décidé de ne plus utiliser sa résidence en bord de mer, la ville d'Ostende a reçu l'ensemble du complexe en concession. Il devait avoir une destination culturelle. Les Galeries vénitiennes ont été rénovées en 1998-1999 et sont maintenant un espace d'exposition.
