Su richiesta del re Leopoldo II, Henri Maquet progettò nel 1900 la prima Galleria Reale: un collegamento chiuso e coperto a forma di L tra il chalet reale e un grande salone di forma ottagonale. La galleria è ora conosciuta con il nome di ‘Gallerie Veneziane’, in riferimento all'architettura classicista di Venezia. Quando la famiglia reale decise di non utilizzare più la sua residenza al mare, la città di Ostenda ricevette in concessione l'intero complesso. Doveva avere una destinazione culturale. Le Gallerie Veneziane sono state ristrutturate nel 1998 - 1999 e ora sono uno spazio espositivo.
