Op vraag van koning Leopold II ontwierp Henri Maquet in 1900 de eerste Koninklijke gaanderij: een L-vormige, gesloten en overdekte verbinding tussen het koninklijk chalet en een groot salon in achthoekige vorm. De galerij is nu gekend onder de naam ‘Venetiaanse Gaanderijen’, verwijzend naar de classicistische architectuur van Venetië. Toen de Koninklijke familie besliste niet langer gebruik te maken van haar verblijfplaats aan zee, kreeg de stad Oostende het hele complex in concessie. Het moest een culturele bestemming krijgen. De Venetiaanse Gaanderijen werden in 1998 – 1999 gerenoveerd en zijn nu een tentoonstellingsruimte.
