La chapelle Saint-Pierre est une chapelle roman-gothique, probablement construite vers 1225 comme faisant partie d'une plus grande église romane (basilique avec transept et collatéraux) en remplacement d'un lieu de prière en bois établi en 764 par saint Gummarus. À la fin du 15ème siècle, après l'achèvement de l'église Saint-Gummarus, selon le chanoine R. Lemaire, la partie occidentale (vaisseau et collatéraux) a été démolie, de sorte que seule la partie choeur, une petite partie du vaisseau et le transept ont été conservés comme chapelle actuelle : assertion fondée entre autres sur le plan de sol peu naturel et le mur occidental nettement plus tardif qui n'est pas relié aux murs latéraux et qui contient encore deux pilastres romains.
