En 1985, Massimo Dutti a été fondé en Espagne. Au début on n’y vendait que des vêtements pour hommes. En 1995 la première collection de vêtements pour femmes a été lancée, avec une variété de styles de décontracté à sophistiqué et intemporel. Aujourd’hui, ils ont une présence commerciale de plus de 700 magasins dans 68 pays notamment en Europe, en Amérique, et en Asie.
Les chaînes font parties du groupe Inditex, un des plus grands fashion détaillants du monde avec plus de 6.460 magasins dans 88 pays installés dans 5 continents. À côté de Massimo Dutti et Zara, les marques suivantes font également partie du groupement Inditex: Pull&Bear, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home et Uterquë.
