Cette église paroissiale néo-gothique (1871-1875) a été construite dans une communauté de pêcheurs en pleine expansion, en remplacement de l'église gothique primitive située au sud de Heist (Koudekerke). Dans l'église, une attention particulière est accordée à la salut des (anciens) pêcheurs et de leurs familles, ainsi qu'à la collection de statues et de reliques de Saint Antoine l'Abbé.
