Le lieu où se trouve le quai du ferry à Sint-Amands est déjà reconnaissable de loin grâce à la statue 'Le Veilleur' du sculpteur Marc Macken (1913-1977) et fait référence au poème éponyme du poète flamand francophone Emile Verhaeren ('Le Passeur d'eau').
Elle a été offerte à la commune de Sint-Amands le 27 novembre 1966 à l'occasion du 50ème anniversaire de la mort d'Emile Verhaeren, né à Sint-Amands.
