Schortens est une ville et une commune autonome dans le district de Friesland en Basse-Saxe. La commune a été proclamée ville en 2005 et est depuis lors la deuxième plus grande ville du district de Friesland après Varel. Depuis le 6 décembre 2011, la ville est reconnue comme station thermale d’État.
Schortens a été mentionnée pour la première fois en 1158 sous le nom de Scortinh. Le nom Scortinghe est documenté de l'année 1190. En 1354, le village est appelé Scortinze et en 1420 Schortensze. Le nom est une dérivation du nom d'appel Scroet ou Scoto avec le suffixe collectif affricatif -ingi, qui a ensuite évolué en -ens.
