La première bière à Hörde a été brassée par les sœurs du monastère de Clarenberg. Sur le site de l'ancien couvent, aux pieds de la Hermannshütte, l'entrepreneur Eduard Frantzen a construit en 1867 une brasserie moderne à production industrielle. Eduard Frantzen est mort lors de la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870/1871. Son frère Ludwig Frantzen a ensuite pris la direction de la brasserie. En 1903, la brasserie a fusionné avec la brasserie Wallrabe, fondée en 1870, qui avait été transformée en société par actions en 1900 et rebaptisée en 1901 "Bürgerliches Brauhaus AG, Hoerde". Depuis lors, le nom de l'entreprise était "Stifts-Brauerei Aktiengesellschaft vorm. Eduard Frantzen und Bürgerliches Brauhaus".
