La prima birra a Hörde fu prodotta dalle monache del Monastero di Clarenberg. Sul sito dell'ex monastero ai piedi dell'Hermannshütte, l'imprenditore Eduard Frantzen fondò nel 1867 una moderna birreria con produzione industriale. Eduard Frantzen morì nella guerra franco-prussiana del 1870/1871. Suo fratello Ludwig Frantzen assunse poi la direzione della birreria. Nel 1903 la birreria si fuse con la Wallrabe-Brauerei, fondata nel 1870, che nel 1900 era stata trasformata in una società per azioni e nel 1901 ribattezzata "Bürgerliches Brauhaus AG, Hoerde". Da allora il nome dell'azienda è stato "Stifts-Brauerei Aktiengesellschaft vorm. Eduard Frantzen und Bürgerliches Brauhaus".
