La primera cerveza en Hörde fue elaborada por las monjas del monasterio de Clarenberg. En el terreno del antiguo monasterio, a los pies de la Hermannshütte, el empresario Eduard Frantzen construyó en 1867 una moderna cervecería de producción industrial. Eduard Frantzen murió en la Guerra Franco-Alemana de 1870/1871. Su hermano Ludwig Frantzen asumió posteriormente la dirección de la cervecería. En 1903, la cervecería se fusionó con la cervecería Wallrabe, fundada en 1870, que se había transformado en una sociedad anónima en 1900 y que en 1901 fue renombrada como “Bürgerliches Brauhaus AG, Hoerde”. Desde entonces, el nombre de la empresa ha sido “Stifts-Brauerei Aktiengesellschaft vorm. Eduard Frantzen und Bürgerliches Brauhaus”.
