Het eerste bier in Hörde werd gebrouwen door de nonnen van het klooster Clarenberg. Op het terrein van de voormalige abdij aan de voet van de Hermannshütte richtte ondernemer Eduard Frantzen in 1867 een moderne, industriële bierbrouwerij op. Eduard Frantzen viel in de Frans-Duitse Oorlog 1870/1871. Zijn broer Ludwig Frantzen nam vervolgens de leiding van de brouwerij op zich. In 1903 fuseerde de brouwerij met de in 1870 gegründigde Wallrabe-brouwerij, die in 1900 werd omgevormd tot een naamloze vennootschap en in 1901 werd omgedoopt tot "Bürgerliches Brauhaus AG, Hoerde". De naam van het bedrijf luidde sindsdien "Stifts-Brauerei Aktiengesellschaft vorm. Eduard Frantzen en Bürgerliches Brauhaus".
