Il a été construit comme forteresse en 1115 par Gerhard Ier et était le siège ancestral de la famille Von Blankenheim.
Les seigneurs de Blankenheim sont investis du titre de comte en 1380.
Les comtes de Blankenheim fusionnèrent avec les comtes de Manderscheid et à partir de 1469 furent appelés Manderscheid-Blankenheim. Avec l’extinction des lignes Manderscheid-Gerolstein et Manderscheid-Kail, le comté de Manderscheid est devenu le plus grand domaine territorial autonome de l’Eifel.
