En tant qu'île Wannsee, on désigne aujourd'hui une région entourée par les eaux de la Havel dans le sud-ouest de Berlin et au nord-est de la capitale brandebourgeoise Potsdam. L'île se situe principalement dans le quartier berlinois de Wannsee du district de Steglitz-Zehlendorf, ainsi qu'une petite partie dans la localité potsdamienne de Klein Glienicke.
La région a été façonnée par la dernière période glaciaire. Du XVIIe au XIXe siècle, elle a été nommée d'après les deux villages situés sur l'île, Klein-Glienicke et Stolpe, en tant que Werder de Glienick ou de Stolpe.
