La bataille de Clavijo eut lieu le 23 mai 844 entre Ramiro Ier des Asturies et Abd al-Rahman II, émir de Cordoue. Cette légende a été créée pour donner plus de gloire à la bataille de Simancas en 939 entre Ramiro II de León et Abd al-Rahman III. L’histoire est la suivante: Ramiro I, dixième prince des Asturies, après Pelayo, avait perdu la bataille d’Albelda la veille. La nuit, saint Jacques apparut et le réprimanda de continuer la bataille. Le lendemain, assis sur un cheval blanc, James combattit aux côtés des Espagnols. Une victoire retentissante pour les chrétiens, d’où son surnom de matamoros ou abatteur de lande. Cela appartient à l’histoire de la Reconquista. Jusqu’en 1808, il y avait une commémoration annuelle dans la cathédrale de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle: le Voto de Santiago.
