L'église Sainte Barbe fut construite en 1938-1939 d'après les plans de l'architecte Claude Robbe et terminée par Alphonse Fenaud, son successeur ; elle est dédiée à Sainte Barbe, protectrice des mineurs.
De construction entièrement métallique avec une structure porteuse en acier et des parements en tôle peinte, cette église a été conçue comme un prototype en vue de la fabrication en série d'églises destinées aux territoires à évangéliser. Une verrière représentant Sainte Barbe a été réalisée par les ateliers Mauméjean à Paris d'après un carton d'Hélène Delaroche. Des peintures murales de Nicolas Untersteller (époux d'Hélène Delaroche) représentent des épisodes de la vie des saints.
