La Tranchée de Calonne est une route longue de 25 kilomètres reliant Verdun à Hattonchâtel. Tracée au 18ème siècle sur les ordres du ministre de Louis XVI, Charles Alexandre de Calonne, elle fut le théâtre de violents combats lors de la Première Guerre Mondiale. Engagé dans le 288e RI en tant que lieutenant, Alain Fournier, auteur du Grand Meaulnes fut porté disparu près de Dommartin la Montagne le 22 septembre 1914. Son corps et ceux de ses camarades furent retrouvés en 1991 dans une clairière du bois de Saint Rémy, à 200 mètres du tracé de la Tranchée de Calonne. Alain Fournier repose désormais au cimetière national de Saint Rémy la Calonne.
