Le col est situé sur le chemin de Saint-Jacques et culmine à 1308m d’altitude sur les hauteurs du village de Lajo à la frontière entre la Haute Loire et la Lozère.
Le « col de l’homme mort » aussi appelé « col de l'Hospitalet » en souvenir d’un hospice dont on connait l’existence au XIIIème siècle. Cet hospice n’existe plus mais la fontaine Saint Roch que l’on dit miraculeuse perpétue son souvenir et suscite encore beaucoup de dévotion.
A quelques centaines de mètres en direction de la Lozère ce trouve l'église Saint-Roch.
