L'existence de ce monolithe d'1 mètre de diamètre est estimée à 45 millions d'années. Une légende de 1124 rapporte qu'elle fut jetée des cieux en signe de malédiction divine, les villageois ne s'étant pas acquittés de la dîme due à l'abbaye de Longeville-lès-Saint-Avold. Une météorite ? Le plus probable, c'est que ce monolithe unique dans la région fut déposé ici au gré des puissants cours d'eau provenant des Vosges au moment du retrait des mers, à la Préhistoire. Il fut monté sur socle en 1965 et se trouve actuellement à droite de l'escalier menant vers l'église.
