Selon la légende, Saint-Hilaire serait passé par Availles pour rendre visite à ses parents. Fatigué, il se serait arrêté près de l'église où il aurait soulevé une grosse pierre sous laquelle aurait jailli une source qui ne s'est, depuis, jamais tarie. La modeste église paroissiale, dont la cure dépendait de Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes, est mentionnée dès le XIIe siècle. Les vestiges de cette époque sont minces.
