Cette courtine, monument historique, reliait l'abbaye de Saint Winoc au reste de la ville , également pour garantir la sécurité des moines.
La haute muraille, renforcée de trois tours , fut renforcée et comblée de terre sous le règne de l'empereur Charles Quint , adaptée aux canons antiaériens puis complétée au XVIIe siècle par Vauban avec le croissant des Jésuites.
