Le château de Haamstede date du 13ème siècle. Le résident le plus célèbre de ce château était Witte de Haamstede, un fils illégitime du comte Floris V. Un violent incendie en 1525 détruit une partie du château, mais le donjon (tour de défense) a été conservé. Après l'incendie, le château reste en ruines pendant 85 ans. Le sauveur du château est le chroniqueur Jacob van den Eynde. Il fait renaître le château de Haamstede au début du 17ème siècle dans sa forme actuelle.
En 1973, le château a été restauré, et en 1981, il a été vendu, avec le parc du château et une vaste zone de dunes, à l'Association des monuments naturels. Le vendeur a exigé le droit d'usage du château et des bois.
