El Castillo de Haamstede data del siglo XIII. El residente más famoso de este castillo fue Witte van Haamstede, un hijo ilegítimo del conde Floris V. Un violento incendio en 1525 destruyó una parte del castillo, pero la torre del homenaje (torre defensiva) se mantuvo. Después del incendio, el castillo permaneció como una ruina durante 85 años. El salvador del castillo es el cronista Jacob van den Eynde. Él hace resurgir el Castillo de Haamstede a principios del siglo XVII en su forma actual.
En 1973, el castillo fue restaurado, y en 1981, se vendió a la Asociación de Monumentos Naturales, junto con el bosque del castillo y la extensa área de dunas. El vendedor se reservó el derecho de uso del castillo y el bosque.
