Il Castello di Haamstede risale al XIII secolo. Il più famoso residente di questo castello fu Witte di Haamstede, un figlio illegittimo del conte Floris V. Un violento incendio nel 1525 distrusse una parte del castello, ma la donjon (torre abitabile difensiva) rimase intatta. Dopo l'incendio, il castello rimase in rovina per 85 anni. Il salvatore del castello è lo storico Jacob van den Eynde. Egli fa rinascere il Castello di Haamstede all'inizio del XVII secolo nella sua attuale forma.
Nel 1973 il castello è stato restaurato e nel 1981 è stato venduto, insieme alla foresta del castello e all'ampia area di dune, all'Associazione dei Monumenti Naturali. Il venditore ha richiesto il diritto d'uso del castello e della foresta.
