Haamstede Castle dates back to the 13th century. The most famous inhabitant of this castle was Witte van Haamstede, a bastard son of Count Floris V. A fierce fire in 1525 destroyed part of the castle, but the keep (defensible residential tower) was preserved. After the fire, the castle stood as a ruin for 85 years. The saviour of the castle is the chronicler Jacob van den Eynde. At the beginning of the 17th century, he resurrected Haamstede Castle in its current form.
In 1973 the castle was restored, and in 1981 it was sold to the Society for the Preservation of Nature in 1981. The seller stipulated the right to use the castle and forest.
