Die Burg Haamstede stammt aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Der berühmteste Bewohner dieser Burg war Witte von Haamstede, ein Bastian Sohn von Graf Floris V. Ein heftiges Feuer im Jahr 1525 zerstörte einen Teil der Burg, aber der Bergfried (verteidigbarer Wohnturm) blieb erhalten. Nach dem Brand stand die Burg 85 Jahre lang als Ruine da. Der Retter der Burg ist der Chronist Jacob van den Eynde. Er lässt die Burg Haamstede zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts in ihrer heutigen Form wiedererstehen.
Im Jahr 1973 wurde das Schloss restauriert, und 1981 wurde es zusammen mit dem Schlosswald und dem weitläufigen Dünengebiet an die Vereinigung Natuurmonumenten verkauft. Der Verkäufer sicherte sich dabei das Nutzungsrecht für Schloss und Wald.
