Le monastère a été fondé en 1847 par les sœurs franciscaines de Heythuysen. Elles y ont également établi plus tard une école de filles et une école de formation, Maria Immaculata. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le complexe a été gravement endommagé et en 1948, les pères passionnistes y ont fondé un séminaire, St. Paulus van het Kruis, qui a ensuite été appelé Gabriëlcollege. Une éducation secondaire y était également dispensée. À partir de 1923, c'était l'école normale catholique Maria-Immaculata. Entre 1977 et 1993, le complexe a été un internat pour bateliers et une école de formation pour la navigation sur le Rhin, ainsi que pour la navigation intérieure et côtière de la Fondation Royal Education Fund for Shipping. En 1997, le complexe a été démoli, à l'exception des façades de l'école de formation. Des logements et des appartements ont été construits et le quartier s'appelle maintenant Maasstaete.
