Le château de Rijckholt se situe légèrement au sud de Maastricht, à la lisière du Heuvelland, dans un environnement arboré. Le plus ancien propriétaire du château de Rijckholt date de 1043. La partie la plus ancienne du château est la tour, construite au XIVe siècle. En 1489, la tour fortifiée avec ses murs de deux mètres d'épaisseur a été détruite, mais a immédiatement été reconstruite, probablement sur les restes du XIVe siècle.
Les archives historiques mentionnent les plus anciens propriétaires du château, parmi lesquels Herman van Gronsveld (1043), Winand van Rijckholt (1148) et Herman van Lynden (1596). Actuellement, le bâtiment a une fonction de restauration.
