Les étangs sont nés au début des années 70 en raison de l'extraction de sable pour l'autoroute A16/E19 de Breda à Anvers et pour la construction de logements à Breda. Depuis la fin des années 70, la municipalité de Breda a développé la zone comme zone de loisirs. Les lacs sont très appréciés des plongeurs car l'eau y est très claire. C'est l'un des lacs d'eau douce les plus clairs des Pays-Bas. Il y a cependant peu de vie dans l'étang en raison de l'acidité faible et du pH élevé de l'eau. Le lac a une profondeur max. de 18 mètres.
