Hellevoetsluis est une fortification maritime, née au 17ème siècle avec une riche histoire de près de 350 ans. À l'origine, le port de Hellevoetsluis a été aménagé pour entretenir la flotte de guerre néerlandaise et servait de refuge hivernal pour cette flotte.
Hellevoetsluis est devenu le principal port de guerre de Hollande. Les navires de l'Amirauté de Rotterdam y étaient nettoyés, réparés et équipés.
À l'initiative du grand pensionnaire Johan de Witt et du lieutenant-amiral Michiel de Ruyter, un régiment de marins a été attribué à la marine en 1665. Le premier commandant était Willem Joseph van Ghent, dont le nom a été donné à la "caserne Van Ghent" à Rotterdam. Aujourd'hui, le 10 décembre 1665 est considéré comme la date de création du Corps des Marines.
