Hellevoetsluis è una fortezza marittima, nata nel 17° secolo con una ricca storia di quasi 350 anni. Inizialmente, il porto di Hellevoetsluis è stato creato per mantenere la flotta di guerra olandese, e serviva come rifugio invernale per questa flotta.
Hellevoetsluis è cresciuta fino a diventare il principale porto di guerra dell'Olanda. Le navi dell'Amiraglio di Rotterdam venivano qui pulite, riparate e equipaggiate.
Su iniziativa del previdente Johan de Witt e del viceammiraglio Michiel de Ruyter, nel 1665 fu assegnato un reggimento di fanteria navale alla marina. Il primo comandante fu Willem Joseph van Ghent, da cui prende nome la "Casermetta Van Ghent" a Rotterdam. Oggi, il 10 dicembre 1665 è considerata la data di fondazione del Corpo dei Marines.
