Hellevoetsluis es una fortaleza marítima, surgida en el siglo XVII con una rica historia de casi 350 años. Originalmente, el puerto de Hellevoetsluis fue creado para mantener la flota naval holandesa, y servía como refugio invernal para esta flota.
Hellevoetsluis se convirtió en el principal puerto de guerra de Holanda. Los barcos de la Almirantazgo de Rotterdam eran limpiados, reparados y equipados aquí.
Por iniciativa del pensionado Johan de Witt y el teniente almirante Michiel de Ruyter, en 1665 se asignó un regimiento de infantería de marina a la armada. El primer comandante fue Willem Joseph van Ghent, a quien se le nombró el "Cuartel Van Ghent" en Rotterdam. Actualmente, el 10 de diciembre de 1665 se considera la fecha de fundación del Cuerpo de Marines.
