Hellevoetsluis is een maritieme vesting, ontstaan in de 17e eeuw met een rijke historie van inmiddels bijna 350 jaar.Oorspronkelijk is de haven van Hellevoetsluis aangelegd om de Nederlandse oorlogsvloot te onderhouden, en diende als winterberging van deze vloot.
Hellevoetsluis groeide uit tot de belangrijkste oorlogshaven van Holland. De schepen van de Admiraliteit van Rotterdam werden hier schoongemaakt, hersteld en uitgerust.
Op initiatief van raadpensionaris Johan de Witt en luitenant-admiraal Michiel de Ruyter, werd er in 1665 een regiment zee-infanteristen aan de marine toegewezen. De eerste commandant was Willem Joseph van Ghent naar wie de "Van Ghentkazerne" in Rotterdam is vernoemd. Thans wordt 10 december 1665 gezien als oprichtingsdatum van het Korps Mariniers.
