Les Bosses de Schadijk étaient auparavant un vaste domaine de landes. Des agriculteurs y faisaient paître des moutons et y prélevaient des plaques de terre. Cela a créé des zones dégagées dans la lande, permettant au vent d'attaquer le sable exposé. Celui-ci s'est accumulé en dunes de sable. Pour lutter contre l'érosion éolienne, une grande partie de la région a été reboisée à la fin du 19e siècle. D'où le caractère vallonné d'une grande partie de la forêt.
