Die Schadijkse Wälder sind ein Gebiet, das früher aus ausgedehnten Heideflächen bestand. Bauern ließen dort Schafe weiden und steckten Torf ab. So entstanden kahle Stellen in der Heide und der Wind bekam Zugang zu dem offen liegenden Sand. Dieser wurde zu Sanddünen aufgeweht. Um der Sandverwehung entgegenzuwirken, wurde ein großer Teil des Gebiets Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts mit Wald bepflanzt. Daher das hügelige Charakteristikum in einem großen Teil des Waldes.
